Police officers and firefighters were investigating if the fire was an arson.

Graham Coggins, of Celandine Close, said the street was smothered with smoke.

He said: “It was very worrying because it was the fear it would spread further.”

It is believed the house was unoccupied.

Graham and Catherine Beale, 44, of Celandine Close, said the house had been left empty after an elderly woman who was living in it died two to three weeks ago.

Catherine, who had lived opposite the bungalow for six years, said: “I was concerned somebody was in there but luckily no one was there.”

Four fire crews attended, including two from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.
