Arrests in town centre - but it was all for charity
Shoppers were left wondering what was going on when two police vans pulled up at the Memorial Gardens, lights flashing and sirens blaring, and officers promptly arrested a bunch of respectable-looking citizens.
On Saturday (November 10), handcuffs were slapped onto the group – including Cllr Chris Oxlade (Lab, Ifield) – and they were hauled into the back of one of the vans and taken to Crawley Police Station.
But no crime had been committed – the group was taking part in a charity event to raise money for Home-Start CHAMS (Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex).
The rest of the group were David Turner, Home-Start trustee; Richard Duncan, Home-Start volunteer; Del Tobias, director of Pro Direct Soccer Academy Sussex; Gordon Leicester, of Facelift GB; and Nicholas Demetriadi.
Fundraising manager Aimee Wiggins said she hoped the event would raise £8,000 and raise awareness of the work done by Home-Start supporting families with a child under five.
Inspector Zahid Khan, of Crawley Police, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support our local charity in this way and hope that it raises plenty of money for such a worthwhile cause.”
