'˜We are all better people for knowing her': Tributes paid to schoolgirl following fatal crash

Tributes have been paid to a '˜gentle and hard working' schoolgirl who died in a crash outside a village bus stop.

Ellie Thornton, of Linfield Copse, in Thakeham, died following a collision with a VW Transporter on the B2139 Storrington Road on Wednesday (March 22), Sussex Police said.

Allison Murphy, headteacher at Rydon Community College, paid tribute to the 11-year-old.

She said: “Everyone at the school has been shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Ellie’s tragic death.

“Ellie was a gentle, hardworking and reliable pupil. She did everything with a smile.

“Everyone who knew Ellie has nothing but praise for her. We are all better people for knowing her.

“We have been sharing our memories of Ellie at school.

“We are continuing to offer support to all those in school who have been affected by this extremely sad news.

“Our thoughts and prayers are, of course with Ellie’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

Nathan Elvery, West Sussex County Council Chief Executive, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear that Ellie has passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends in this difficult time.”
