‘Hercufleas’ by Sam Gayton has won the West Sussex Children’s Story Book Award 2016.

This lyrical fable of a flea and a girl searching for a hero to destroy the monstrous Yuk has captured the imagination of children in 18 primary schools across the county.

One of four titles on the shortlist, ‘Hercufleas’ is a page-turning adventure with unique characterisation and an intricate plot focusing on how even the smallest of heroes can overcome challenges against all the odds.

The Schools Library Service worked in partnership with libraries to host author presentations for participating schools in libraries around West Sussex as part of the project.
