The Liberal Democrats welcome Mr Osborne’s U-Turn on cuts to working tax credits and police services after an extensive campaign to stop both.
Committing to cuts would have harmed the economic and national security which Conservatives claim to uphold.
However, it remains a sham that whilst Mr Osborne proclaims his party follows ‘One Nation Conservatism’, the under 25s are excluded from the upcoming National Living Wage of £9 per hour.
Alongside this, restricting access to housing benefits proves that the young are being ignored by the Tory government.
Drastic cuts to local councils are decimating social services. Allowing councils to raise tax by 2% to fund further social care is not sufficient, and will only further increase costs to families.
Social care requires real investment; otherwise some of the most vulnerable will bear the brunt of austerity.
Ideologically driven austerity threatens the fabric of society. You cannot fix a roof if you continue to undermine the structures which support it.
