CRAWLEY Town have been denied all three points by substitute Charlie Taylor's 85th minute header.
Jefferson Louis gave Reds a sixth minute lead and both sides had a hatful of chances in the opening 45 minutes.
Things tightened up in the second half but Crawley really should have killed their visitors off.
Louis should have hit the net from inside the box and Cook was denied a certain goal by George Beavan's crucial block.
With five minutes remaining Grays swung in a corner and Taylor was left unmarked to head beyond the reaches of stopper Nick Jordan, and Danny Charge even had the chance to win it for Grays but slotted wide in stoppage time.
(0 (+2): Yellow card for Danny Forrest.
90 (+1): Slip by Same Rents and Danny Charge is in here to win it for Grays, he ships the ball onto his left and shoots across Jordan, but the ball bounces agonisingly wide for the striker.
90 mins: Crawley have a corner but it's really poor from Carruthers, doesn't even miss the first man.
85 mins: GOAL FOR GRAYS. Substitute Charlie Taylor heads a corner into the net to stun the home crowd. Just before fellow substitute Jamie Slabbler had a great chance to score but his shot was deflected for a corner. That was swung in and Taylor was completely unmarked to beat Jordan.
84 mins: One of the Grays bench has been sent to the stands for being a little bit over zealous.
83 mins: Yellow card for Grays. Kenny Davies becomes the third Grays player to go into referee Stephen Ross' book.
80 mins: Crawley sub. Cook off for Daniel Powell.
77 mins: Grays sub. Sam Cutler off, Jamie Slabber on.
76 mins: Cogan down the right plays the ball into the near post, Cook is there but George Beavan throws himself at the ball and it deflects off him and over the bar. Crucial intervention for Grays, that was 2-0 otherwise.
75 mins: They so nearly get a second. Louis rolls Gavin Hoyte in the box, puts his foot through the ball and just as the crowd expect to see the net bulge it sails wide.
We've had far less chances in this second half, Crawley have tightened up considerably at the back and are passing the ball around sweetly in the final third, they still need another goal to settle the nerves.
65 mins mins: Grays sub. Rigoglioso off for Charlie Taylor.
64 mins: Thomas Pinault slides a diagonal through ball, Louis is way offside but he showed awareness to leave the ball to Malcolm. He doesn't have the confidence to take the ball on an has an ambitious effort from distance which is wide.
60 mins: Grays sub. Thomas Harvey off for Kenny Davies.
51 mins: Michael Malcolm dances his way past two defenders in the box, he does really well but just as he is about to pull the trigger a Grays defender stretches out a leg and steals the ball from him.
46 mins: Second half gets underway, Crawley work the ball well in the final third, Louis to Carruthers but his cross into the box is slightly over cooked and goes above two waiting Reds players.
45 mins. Crawley sub: Glenn Wilson, who picked up a slight injury is off for Barry Cogan. Cogan slots into midfield with Hutchinson droping into central defence.
JEFFERSON Louis' first competitive goal for Crawley separates the two sides in what has been an action-packed first half at the Broadfield.
Louis - who has looked lively - finished after Glenn Wilson had headed back across goal after nine minutes.
Grays have got behind Crawley on several occasions, Danny Charge hitting the post and Richard Graham denied by Reds' stopper Nick Jordan, and just before half-time Glen Poole shot wide when he should have made it 1-1.
Crawley have had their chances, Sam Rents firing a free kick inches wide, Chris Carruthers - on for the injured Charlie Ademeno - denied by Preston Edwards and right on 45 minutes Michael Malcolm skied a good chance.
Let's hope the second half is equally entertaining!
45 mins: Crawley should score. Jefferson Louis beats his man down the left and cuts the ball back for Malcolm, from inside the box though he skies his shot high over the bar. It seemed to take a slight bobble just before he hit it to be fair to the player.
44 mins: Massive let off for Crawley. Charge did so well again to bring a long ball under his spell, turn Wilson on the left of the box and have the awareness to just touch the ball into the path of Glen Poole, but from 12 yards he somehow screwed his shot wide of the far post.
Well after an extremely open first 30 minutes the game has settled for the moment. Both sides have had a fair few chances, Crawley just shading it and deservidly infront.
33 mins: Only a fine save from Edwards denies Carruthers from doubling Crawley's lead. Malcolm did excellently to stand a cross up into the box and pick out the substitute, who did everything right, heading down and into the corner but Edwards threw himself down and clawed the ball away. Again is goes into the box, Carruthers finding Cook but he heads over.
32 mins: Yellow card for Danny Charge.
29 mins: Crawley free kick 25 yards from goal. Cook touches the ball to Rents, he hammers a left-footed effort which whistles inches past the right hand post. He scored from a similar position last Saturday and wasn't far away at all with that effort.
26 mins: A chance at both ends. Malcolm hits a free kick into the box which finds Louis unmarked, he swings at the ball but doesn't make the intended contact. Edwards collects and send it long upfeild, Charge controls and wriggles past Wilson, he pokes at goal but Jordan is out again to block.
23 mins: Yellow card. Adriano Rigoglioso is carded for a challenge on Pinault after the ball had gone.
21 mins: Crawley Sub. Charles Ademeno has an early head injury and can't continue, Chris Carruthers replaces him.
20 mins: The linesman is waving his flag for a grays handball just outside the box but the referee waves play on as the ball falls to Cooke, from a tight angle his shot lacks power and Preston Edwards gathers.
Jefferson Louis looks up for this today, Reds fans have waited for him to show what he could do so after netting his first competitive goal this could well be his day. Grays have fired a couple of early warning signs mind.
13 mins: Grays get behind the Crawley defence again, this time Richard Graham is through on goal, keeper Jordan rushes out and in the end Graham's shot is tame and easily blocked by the keeper's legs.
Crawley have shaped up in a 4-4-2 formation with Cook playing off targetman Louis upfront and Malcolm and Ademeno on either flank. Hutchinson and Pinault are the two centre midfielders.
9 mins: Danny Charge bursts through the middle and shoots with his left, but his low curler strikes the outside of the post. Let off.
9 mins: GOAL FOR CRAWLEY. Same Rents floats a long free kick over from the left, Glen Wilson nods it back across goal and Jefferson Louis is there to hook the ball over the keeper. Just the start Evans would have wanted.
3 mins: Forrest slips Jamie Cook into the box but Gavin Hoyte makes a crucial block
1 mins: Crawley get the match underway, playing from right to left where we are from the press box in their usual all red kit, against Grays in sky blue.
STEVE Evans makes no fewer then six changes from last Saturday's 4-1 defeat here by Gateshead including goalkeeper Simon Rayner, who drops to the bench in place of Nick Jordan.
Also out are Lewis Killeen, Barry Cogan who start on the bench, and Simon Rusk, Chris Giles and Ben Smith, who don't even make today's bench.
Reds welcome back creative midfielder Thomas Pinault who has recovered from a hamstring injury, and Evans will be hoping he can provide the spark badly missing last weekend.
