CRAWLEY Town continued their impressive pre-season with a resounding 6-1 victory against a young Spurs XI at Broadfield Stadium on Tuesday night.

Two goals each for Jamie Cook and man of the match Lewis Killeen were added to with further strikes by Glenn Wilson and Isaiah Rankin as Reds ran riot against an inexperienced side.

A good size crowd of 2,311 came out to enjoy what was potentially going to be an exciting clash.

However it turned out to be a one-sided rout as the occasional attacking threat of the Premiership giants was well dealt with by the more experienced Reds' defence.

Crawley took the lead in fine style with former Arsenal striker Isaiah Rankin scoring their opening goal in the 25th minute with impressive ease, collecting a long ball through the middle from Chris Giles, and turning to put in on the volley.

It was the perfect debut for the former Premiership player, who had signed a one-year deal for Town earlier in the day following a successful trial. See Raynor's thoughts on his signing here.

Cook increased the lead in on 32 minutes, making a simple job of finishing from a short-range from a Killeen cross.

Spurs' boss Clive Allen brought on four substitutes at the start of the second half and for a while they got back into the game with a 52nd minute goal when their most eye-catching player, striker Andy Barcham weaved a superb run from midfield, and left the Town back four in their tracks before scoring with a fine individual effort.

Barcham was one of only two Tottenham players on show with first team experience. He made one appearance for them in the Carling Cup in 2006 during their 3-1 win against Port Vale, along with Dorian Devite.

Crawley soon acted to regain their two-goal advantage when 10 minutes later Killeen made it 3-1 with a shot which deflected off advancing 'keeper Lee Butcher into the net.

Triallists Miles Coop and Tom Lyons have now left the club following their trial and will not be taken on.

Reds assistant manager Paul Raynor described the performance as 'oustanding' and picked out man-of-the-match Lewis Killeen for praise after his two goals.

Spurs reserve boss, Clive Allen, told the Tottenham Hotspur website: "It was a poor evening's work but a short sharp shock as to what the game's all about. I've learnt a lot about my players, which is why this is an important part of the season.

"I don't like getting beat at any time, especially not in this manner. So although this isn't easy to take, sometimes you do get these whacks on the chin like I said to the players after the game.

"The players know what's expected of them and they let themselves down, I've told them that, and now they have to bounce back and show everyone what they're capable of.

"I've said to them that this might not be the last time in their careers that this happens, and you wouldn't like to think that any of them will enjoy being in this situation again.

"There's a lot to work on, but the positives are that many of the players got 90 minutes under their belts against a very energetic and enthusiastic Crawley side.

"We have to move on. I've said my bit, they understand, they don't become bad players overnight, but they did show the poorer side of what they're capable of."
