Sergio Torres has admitted he rejected the chance to leave Crawley Town on loan.

The midfielder made just his third start since August in Saturday’s FA Cup defeat of Chelmsford, and having been almost an ever-present in Crawley’s two promotion winning seasons, admits he is finding it tough to adjust to life as a squad player.

But the Argentine vowed to fight for his place in Richie Barker’s side, turning-down a possible move away last month.

“A couple of weeks ago there was mention of going out on loan, but I decided to stay here and work hard to get my place back,” Torres said. “I miss playing, but I thought ‘I am going to stick with it, keeping working hard and see what happens in the next few months’.

“It has been very hard for me, In the last two and a half years I have not found myself in this situation. Hopefully I can show him (Barker) I care about this club and I want to play. I have been through a lot with the club in the last two and a half years, winning the Conference, getting promoted this year and reaching the FA Cup fifth round. You hear the fans singing my name, it’s unbelievable, I connect really well with them, they know hoe much I care.”

The FA Cup has been to Torres in his time with Crawley. The Reds have reached the Third Round for three successive seasons, having only been there once previously, while he wrote his name into Crawley folklore with the Third Round winner against Derby County in 2011. Torres, who earned the 88th minute penalty which resulted in Saturday’s third goal, had never been past the First Round before arriving at the Broadfield, and he feels there could be more heroics to come this season.

“We knew it was not going to be easy against Chelmsford,” he added. “The attitude was brilliant and we played some good football on a difficult pitch.”
