Crawley sign Sunderland goalkeeper

Crawley Town have confirmed young goalkeeper Johnny Maddison has joined on-loan until the end of the season.

The Sunderland youth team shot-stopper comes in after Michel Kuipers’ departure opened the door for a new understudy to the ever-present Paul Jones. Maddison made six appearances for the Black Cats’ under-18s side last season and has impressed while training with Crawley in the last week.

Manager Richie Barker said Maddison has given himself a ‘head start’ if the Reds look to make a permanent signing in the summer.

“Taff (Williams) has very good knowledge of young goalkeepers and has spoken very highly of him from the work they did last week,” Barker added. “There are going to be a lot of goalkeepers available in the summer and he has a head start on them, although he is a long way from home.”
