Neil Redfearn was sacked on Monday after four months in charge at the New York Stadium, where he took over from ex-Reds boss Steve Evans.

Yates, who has been at Crawley for nine months, has emerged in the frame for the role alongside ex-Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio.

An Observer source has suggested there is truth to the link and Yates is believed to be interested.

When asked about Crawley’s ongoing takeover at the end of January, Yates hinted his future was unclear, saying: “I might be out on my ear straight away. I might be the first one out. Until it is all clear and we have spoken to them about their plans, I can’t really say a lot about it.”

Reds chief executive Michael Dunford said: “This is news to me, I very much doubt it’s true, because he has another 18 months left on his contract.”
