He said: “I don’t know where that came from. They took one manager from Crawley once (Steve Evans), maybe that was the link, but nothing from me, no.”

Former manager Neil Redfearn was sacked on Monday after four months in charge at the New York Stadium, having taken over from ex-Reds boss Steve Evans.

Yates had previously admitted his future was unclear at Crawley as he had not been able to speak to the potential in-coming owners about his role.

Two weeks ago he said: “I might be out on my ear straight away. I might be the first one out.”

The Yorkshire Post has named former Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock as the favourite to be appointed.

Rotherham hope to have their new man in place in time for Saturday’s home game against Birmingham City.
