The 55-year-old former Chelsea coach was announced as the club’s new head coach last Wednesday.

The swift appointment came after Mark Yates was relieved of his duties two days’ earlier, despite having a year to run on his contract.

Drummy ran the successful academy and under-21 side at Chelsea and worked with the first team as international head coach before he ended his ten-year spell their last year.

He is hoping to follow in the footsteps of the club’s previous coaches who have stepped into their maiden first team roles.

On why he left the Premier League side, Drummy said: “I think if you are sitting behind (Jose) Mourinho - and that’s not a name drop - and then Brendan (Rogers) made the move and then Paul Clement and Steve Holland made the move.

“I did it differently where I moved away, I didn’t have a club to step into, I just felt it was a challenge. I read a lot of books and autobiographies from a lot of successful people and they are scared when they make the challenge.

“I thought it is comfortable, it is Chelsea, I earnt a lot of money. We produced players and got up to a level where I could have thought, we’ve done ok.

“But I got in the end to a level where I was flattening out, I knew I was flattening out. I had to make the move and I am really happy.

“It’s great to come out your comfort zone.

“I think the vision is that if you talk about football clubs they have ways of playing and that is very important for me, that the fans do come and go ‘look we might not have won today, but it was a good game’ - I think that is important.”
