The Reds boss has now allowed Rooney to take up an offer he has been given to play for Arizona.

Rooney said: “I am very grateful to manager Mark Yates and the club for allowing me to take up this opportunity. And I would like to apologise to the manager and players for the mix-up in communication about me being allowed to travel and train to Arizona.

“I wish the players, manager and club all the very best in the future.

“I enjoyed my time at Crawley but I’m really looking forward to this new, totally different and exciting chapter in my career with Arizona United.”
