Jonte secures Crawley Senior Cup progress

Jonte Smith’s first half goal secured Crawley Town’s safe passage to the last eight of the Sussex Senior Cup in tonight’s 1-0 win at Newhaven.

The 18-year-old frontman bagged the winner at Fort Road as a youthful Reds side eased through without too many scares against the Sussex County League Division 2 leaders.

With six first team squad members on show, it was a strong Crawley line up mixed with members of Steve Martin’s youth team.

And the Reds were on the front foot for long spells of the first half, although Newhaven’s Richie Watton fired into the side netting after a buccaneering break from Sean Breach.

Crawley went in front when Smith latched on to Billy Woon’s raking pass and although his first effort was saved by Ben Pryor, he stabbed home the rebound.

There were more bright moments for the visitors, as Scott Melville went close on a couple of occasions, while at the other end keeper Jonny Maddison recovered well after miss-kicking Dannie Bulman’s backpass.

Newhaven did go close at the death though, when Lee Robinson’s angled shot was well held by Maddison in stoppage time.
