Horsham skipper James Johnson was relieved to beat Brighton & Hove off the final ball of their Sussex Gray-Nicolls T20 semi-final.

Sunday’s home game provdied the Cricketfield Road spectators with a nailbiting finish, which could have gone either way.

Brighton fought back from a 15 an over asking-rate at one stage to just ten runs needed to win from the last six balls.

In the end bowler Jonathan Whiting, who took 4-31, held his nerve as four wickets fell in the final over. including a run-out as Horsham won by two runs.

Earlier, Michael Thornely had led the way with the bat by scoring a well-struck 51 as Horsham amassed 173 for 4 from their 20-overs.

Horsham captain James Johnson was delighted to clinch victory, but admitted it was too close for comfort.

He said: “We got the job done in the end. We were outstanding with the bat. We had plenty of runs.

“I thought we were slightly complacent in the field which allowed Brighton to get closer to our total than I thought they would.

“Fair play to them, they batted very well, struck the ball very well, especially at the end and found the boundaries when needed.

“We didn’t quite stick to our plans as we set out to do at the start of the day with the ball.

“All credit to them for getting as close as they did.

“I’m pleased we got the right result at the end of the day and I look forward to a nice final at Hove.”
