Ifield collected maximum points after a fine six-wicket win over St James inspired by spinners Jigga Parekh, Guru Kedarnath and captain Jack Groves.

St James won the toss and elected to bat but with only four runs on the board, visiting skipper Michael Murray mistimed a drive off the bowling of Sam Dorrington and Daniel Groves made good ground to take the catch.

The Ifield seamers were unable to add to this early success and the score moved onto 67 before the introduction of spin secured the next breakthrough when Parekh got one to turn sharply and keeper Groves took the catch.

Spinners Parekh and Kedarnath combined for the wicket of the patient Henry Sims (36) who skied one off Kedarnath and Parekh took the catch.

The important wicket of Adam Davies (7) followed when he was smartly stumped by Groves off Parekh to leave the visitors at 91 for 4.

Mali Richards was brilliantly caught and bowled by Kedarnath for 28 and the innings fell away resulting in the total of 143 being under par.

Parekh finished with excellent figures of 5-57 and Kedarnath 4-31 and keeper Groves took 3 catches and 2 stumpings.

Ifield’s response started badly when Greg Barton was bowled by Jordan Shaw without scoring but fellow opener Graeme Dean and new batsman Sam Dorrington batted solidly in the face of a quick St James bowling attack particularly Mali Richards.

Dorrington had reached 25 unexpectedly hit spinner Sam Rattle straight up in the air and Murray took the catch to leave the home side on 45 for 2.

Dean survived a couple of big shouts but when on 16 before being given out off a less convincing decision.

Joe Cooke like Dorrington before him looked good and in control but played across the line to spinner Rattle and was out LBW for 15 and at 65 for 4 Ifield were suddenly in a spot of bother.

Skipper Jack Groves and Kedarnath knuckled down and played some sensible cricket against the spinners, picking up singles where they could without taking any unnecessary risks and gradually they managed to seize back control of the game.

Mali Richards was introduced back into the attack as St James tried everything to break the partnership.

But Groves accelerated nicely and when he hit a big six down the ground the game was just about over.

Ifield reached their victory target with the partnership unbeaten on 79 with Groves on 42 and Kedarnath on 37.

Ifield will hope to take this form away to Findon next Saturday.

Ifield 2nds secured their third straight win with a 48 run win away to Stirlands thanks to a maiden league century from 14-year -old Mahad Ahmed.
