Mayfield continued their dominance of Sussex Cricket League Division Four with yet another victory yesterday (Saturday).
A 93-run triumph at home to Southwater gave Mayfield their ninth win out of 10 and a commanding 53-point cushion at the top of the table with eight games remaining.
A splendid individual performance from Rob Sharma was the highlight for Mayfield. Sharma top-scored with 96 as Mayfield amassed 251-7 declared batting first, with Sam Hyne scoring 57 and Paul Osborne taking 3-43.
Sharma then took 5-17 off seven overs with the ball to help bowl Southwater out for 158 in 29.3 overs. Nick Baker blasted an unbeaten 40 off just 19 deliveries.
Crawley are up to second after winning by 65 runs away to Henfield in a game featuring nearly 600 runs. Crawley blazed their way to 330-6 declared in 48.3 overs after choosing to bat, with Kunal Kapoor blasting a brilliant 144 and Harry Chaudhary making 50.
Paul Clifford then ripped through the Henfield batting with 6-59 in 15.3 overs as the hosts were all out for 265 in 48.3 overs - exactly the same amount as Crawley faced. Tom Paine made exactly 100, yet still ended up on the losing side.
Slinfold’s stuttering form continued with a 28-run defeat away to bottom club Hellingly, which dropped them out of the top two. Hellingly rattled up 250-7 batting first thanks largely to James Pooley’s 98.
Slinfold were all out for 222 in reply despite Akeem Jordan’s 55 and 32 off just 20 balls by last man Harrison Webb. Gavin Sutherland took four wickets and David Pye three.
Fourth-placed Rye drew away to Keymer & Hassocks in another match where the runs flowed. Keymer & Hassocks racked up 270-4 declared after choosing to bat, Alex Brakell hitting 98 at the top of the order and Lee Pittavino 52 not out from 38 deliveries.
Rye ended their reply on 233-9. Dan Seabrook top-scored with 79, captain Gary Willis made a career best 57 at number eight and number 10 Harry Smeed stood firm on 24 not out. Pittavino and Andy Westgate claimed three wickets apiece.
Wisborough Green picked up only their second league win of the season in a somewhat lower scoring contest at home to Stirlands. Raj Maru took 5-21 to bowl Stirlands out for just 86 and Wisborough Green knocked off the runs for the loss of only two wickets through Jim Salder (36 not out) and Nick Baron (35 not out).
Standings (all played 10 matches): 1 Mayfield 283pts, 2 Crawley 230, 3 Slinfold 210, 4 Rye 190, 5 Henfield 188, 6 Stirlands 164, 7 Keymer & Hassocks 151, 8 Southwater 145, 9 Wisborough Green 128, 10 Hellingly 114.
