Barker wants ruthless Reds

Richie Barker felt his side were again made to pay for a lack of cutting edge in front of goal in today’s 2-0 defeat at Crewe.

In an impressive first 45 minutes Gary Alexander struck the outside of the post and Nicky Adams twice had shots blocked close to goal.

The hosts improved after the break and a quick-fire brace from on-loan Fulham striker Lauri Dalla Valle handed Crewe the three points.

For Barker it followed a similar pattern to the Tuesday night defeat to Yeovil as he said: “I thought some of the football (in the first half) was excellent going forward.

“Yes Paul (Jones) pulled off a good save, (but) predominantly most of the trouble they caused us first half came from mistakes of our own, sloppiness from a certain extent. But in the first half I thought we were excellent.

“We had one cleared off the line and hit the post all within 90 seconds and it was the continuity of Tuesday night really, just moved on to a different ground with the same answers.

“But we are creating the opportunities, although we’re not coming away from games saying he missed a sitter or remember that one, it’s just opportunities we’re creating, we’re just looking for someone to be a bit more ruthless.”

The result made it back to back defeats for the first time this season, a record that despite being broken the Crawley players should be proud of.

“We talked about it and the players are always positive about that statement that we make and we got (to) 20 games before we’ve lost back to back games,” Barker said.

“When you hear about other clubs who go four, five, six defeats, ten games without a win it makes you realise to get 20 games in is not so bad really.

“But we shouldn’t have to be talking about that because we should have got something on Tuesday night and, from the first half performance we should have got something today as well.”
