Crawley boss Evans dreaming of another crack at Fergie

STEVE Evans is eyeing a repeat of last year’s FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Manchester United, if his Crawley side can cause an upset against Hull City tomorrow.
The Reds go to the KC Stadium in tomorrow’s Fourth Round, and while Crawley Town manager Evans acknowledges it will be a tough test against Nick Barmby’s Championship play-off hopefuls, he would relish another massive adventure were they to get through. Reds were beaten 1-0 by Sir Alex Ferguson’s men at Old Trafford as Crawley took 9,000 fans to Manchester in last year’s Fifth Round.
“If they play well, and we play well, we will get beat. We believe we can go there and play really well,” Evans said. “They are two teams that like to attack, and I would rather be involved in a game of 6-5 rather than 1-0. I want the team to be involved in the cup tie on 70 minutes, and the home fans might get a bit restless, we have a habit of being able to win cup ties late on.
“If you would ask our players, some would like to be at the Emirates, or Stamford Bridge or White Hart Lane, they are all dream cup ties. But for me, it’s Fergie 1-0 Evans. He scored with a breakaway goal, we didn’t.
“I want to go back and take him on. He played us a huge compliment when we played Wrexham the Tuesday before that game, he watched us and by his own words, that made him field players like Wayne Rooney.
“You could not say it was a weakened team, nine of them were involved against Marseille in the Champions League four days later.
“That was a memorable day, it does not mean it was a one-off, we would love to do it again. “I will not be too disheartened if we are at White Hart Lane, The Emirates or Stamford Bridge, as long as we are still in the cup.”
Evans is in regular contact with Sir Alex’s son Darren, the Peterborough United manager, but has had the occasional text message from the Premier League’s most successful manager, congratulating Crawley on lifting the Conference title, and a ‘personal’ message at Christmas.
Evans added: “For me he is the godfather of all managers everyone wants to challenge him, I’m sure Nicky Barmby does, I’m sure he would love to take Hull to Old Trafford. I know we would take more fans to Old Trafford.”
