Crawley skipper Gary Alexander has joined League 2 AFC Wimbledon on loan for the remainder of the season.

Reds confirmed the deal less than half an hour before the end of the transfer window with Richie Barker indicating he could no longer offer the striker first team football.

“We have real competition for places now with the arrival of three strikers during the transfer window and Billy Clarke in outstanding form,” Barker told the club website.

“You can never guarantee any player his place and Gary is the same, even though he has been a superb captain for me and always given his very best in games and training.

“We felt a move for the rest of the season could help Gary rediscover his goalscoring form. I’m sure he will be a success at Wimbledon and he will be back at the end of the season when we will re-assess things.”

The former Brentford striker has scored five goals in 33 appearances this season and has been an ever present in the Crawley side.

But with new arrivals in attack he no longer features in the manger’s plans.

Barker has said he will select a new captain tomorrow (Friday) ahead of the League 1 clash with Swindon.
