Hakeem Adelakun and Guernsey’s Dave Rihoy both shot narrowly wide in the opening exchanges of this exciting game and set the pattern for a match that could so easily have finished 8-6!

Defences were at times dreadfully open but then they were equally cool and stubborn, while attacks were occasionally brilliant but then sometimes woeful.

Both keepers covered themselves in glory with a string of magnificent saves, although their goalmouths often resembled battle zones with clearances off the line and last-gasp deflections.

Both keepers covered themselves in glory though with a string of magnificent saves, although their goalmouths often resembled battle zones with clearances off the line and last-gasp deflections.

Chris Tardif in the visitors’ goal made a great block to deny the outstanding Allan Tait and then held onto the follow up drive by the always busy Adelakun, while Kieron Thorp at the other end saved well at the feet of the tricky Matt Loaring.

Tardif brilliantly tipped over a near post header by Ben Godfrey, while a free-kick by Mark Pulling ended with three clearances off the line in the space of ten seconds!

But then it was Thorp’s turn to make a superb diving save to keep out Rihoy’s deflected volley.

Tait and Adekakun were both denied again before half-time, and it took until the 54th minute before Tardif was finally beaten by Tait after a nice lay-off by Sam MacVicar.

Guernsey should have made an instant reply but Rihoy fluffed his chance as Dominic Heaume headed into his path in front of an open goal.

Tony Garrod then spread a glorious ball to Adelakun, but Tardif was again equal to the task, while a tremendous run by Loaring fizzled out at the last moment. With six minutes remaining, Garrod and Tait combined to set up MacVicar for a welcome second goal, but even in added-time there were more thrills as Tardif tipped away a glorious curling effort by Tait and Jamie Crellin chested a Heaume shot off the line.
