FOOTBALL Down slump after marvellous display

Sussex County League Division 1 Crawley Down 0 Ringmer 2 THIS match was rather akin to after the Lord Mayor's Show, the show itself being Tuesday night's match seven-goal thrashing of local rivals East Grinstead Town.

Down never really got going throughout this match and on the odd occasion they were able tomount any sort of attack they found themselves rebuffed with ease.

The Anvils were slow to settle and the visitors, placed second to bottom in the table, were quick to take advantage with a corner in the first two minutes, followed by two more cleared off Down's lines.

Little was seen up front from the home side and when it did itwas usually through the industrious Dan Sullivan, who had a 25-yard free-kick saved by 'keeper Rand.

However on 13 minutes and from strong Ringmer pressure, the Anvils were rocked when striker Jay Sowter was given the freedom of the Haven and tucked away the visitors' opener.

The villagers quickly responded with Mark McGibbon on one of his many forays upfield had his shot saved on 15 minutes.

As the game progressed it was becoming noticeable that the visitors were winning most of the 50/50s and seemed hungrier for the ball.

The Anvils struggled to get their passes together, on 25 minutes however from a bout of passingfrom the Sullivan'sTony Reid was let in but the chance went awry.

Then on 32 minutes with both bench and teams getting more frustrated a debateable offside cry went amiss enabling the visitors' Jo Jo Tubon to double the Ringmer scoreline.

Jahmahl King was then booked on 40 leaving Down a mountain to climb in the secondperiod.

Mark McGibbon surged down the right going past three men but lost out on the final ball.

Lee Wood made several runs and supplied crosses but they lacked that extra yardage to find the net.

On 60 minutes Sowter went close for the visitors and the match drifted to a close.

DOWN: Goldsmith, McGibbon, King, Powell, Etherington, D.Sullivan,(Waterhouse), Beeston, Cane, Wood (Upton), N,Sullivan, Reid.
