Cottesmore Junior Academy star Richard Bailey put in a tremendous effort in the last event of the year to win the Autumn Masters competition and finish top of the 2012 Order of Merit.

The 11-year-old gained four top top-three performances to steal the prize from favourite Josh Greig, eight.

Bailey put in his best performance of the season to finish 35cm from the ninth hole in this 36 shot, flag event and finished ahead of 32 competitors.

His has also achieved his season’s goal of cutting his handicap to 28 which will allow him to play in junior member events and adult competitions at Cottesmore next season.

The week before Bailey had finished third in the rescheduled Academy Championship after faltering on the seventh hole leaving the impressive Josh Dance to take the title.

Not to be outdone, Richard’s sister Heather won the girls’ event and topped the girls 2012 Order of Merit.

Cottesmore’s director of golf Calum Callan said: ‘Josh is bitterly disappointed as he has been in the driving seat the whole season. With better course management he may well have won the main order of merit which would have been a hell of an achievement for someone so young.”
