Crawley Lifesavers impress at National Championships

Crawley Town Life Saving Club's 17-strong youth team travelled to Millfield School in Somerset to compete in the Surf Life Saving Youth Pool National Championships.

They finished fourth and eighth respectively in the girls and boys championships which resulted in sixth place overall.

Crawley Town’s top point scorer with five golds, two silver and a bronze was Martin Schofield competing in he boys’ 16-17 age-group.

This included two individual wins in 50m carry and 100m carry with fins, plus a further three British record-breaking relay wins team-mates Joseph Woollard, Sam Murray and Elliot Key.

For the girls, top honours were shared by the 19 and under relay team of Jade Hand Rachel Key, Emma Wilkinson and Elli Munday who won gold in the 4 x 50m obstacle relay and two silvers in the 4 x 25m manikin and 4 x 50m medley relay.

Crawley’s youngest team - which were put together a few weeks prior to the event - comprised of Frankie Philips, Georgia Blenkey, Brooke Mickel and Ruby Jamieson for the 13 age-group finished sixth remarkable in all three 15 years relays age-groups making the club’s future appear very promising.

Crawley Town’s 17 age-group girls, which consisted of Ellyn Reeve, Megan Hales, Maisie Hand and Lauren Benyon all achieved personal best times and in doing so gained valuable points to place the girls higher than the boys.

Unluckily Kyle Stewart was denied his personal best performance in the 100m tow due to a questionable false start call.

The championship which was contested over an exhausting day of competition brings to a close the lifesaving pool season and for those fortunate enough to have gained qualifying times, four months of preparation now lay ahead for RESCUE 2016 the World Lifesaving Championships.
