Kelsey turns back the clock but Ifield get through in cup

Sussex Intermediate Cup Third Round

Ifield 3

Southwick II 1

By Geoff Thornton

Ifield eventually made it through to the fourth round despite an immaculate display by the visiting goalkeeper Chris Kelsey.

He was reminiscent of his illustrious namesake more than 50 years ago, Jack Kelsey of Arsenal and Wales.

Kelsey defied Piller in a one-on-one before Matt Mundaynodded against the woodwork.

Ryan Brackpool was tripped for a stonewall penalty but referee Ray Upton waved play-on.

Kelsey was there again to turn aside Martin’s follow up and saved brilliantly from Dhiman before foiling Piller.

In extra time Kelsey saved a penalty from Chris Ashton.

The breakthrough finally came after 104 minutes when James Morey despatched the rebounding equaliser for the visitors. The Villagers regained the lead after 110 minutes with a close range header by Munday from a corner.

Three minutes later it was all over as Piller set up Wragg who again finished powerfully before the amazing Kelsey to made a marvellous save from Cawte.

Ifield: O’Donnell; Neupert, Rendell, M.Munday, Dolding (Wragg); Dunster (Cawte); Brackpool, Ashton; Martin, Piller, Dhiman (J.Munday)
