ANYONE for hockey? Primary School kids across Crawley certainly love it as they have recently taken up the sport thanks to an initiative by a local fan.

Parent, schoolteacher and former Horley councillor Richard Nixon organised a training course at Thomas Bennett Community College in a new form of the sport adopted speciall for under-11s, Quicksticks.

A total of 11 primary schools teachers and 20 pupils attended the session after Nixon masterminded the development of the sport in the area by forming the Crawley and Horley Hockey Development Scheme.

They have so far far received a total of £8688 in grants from charities and local government bodies who have used the cash to supply speciallly designed Quicksticks hockey bags to 22 primary schools.

The bags consist of hockey sticks and balls designed to be used by young children indoors plus curriculum packs.

Among the grants they have recived are: £500 from Coutts Charitable Trust and £2500 from Courage Dyers Recreational Trust which is administered by Mayor of Crawley’ office.

Another £2000 grant from West Crawley County Local Committee that will provide quicksticks sets for five more primary schools in Crawley to subsidise the cost of children from low income families attending a summer hockey academy course.

The scheme has also recently received £1000 Sport in Motion grant from Crawley Borough Council to provide leadership award courses for pupils in the local high schools.
