FOOTBALL: Friends and family of popular referee George Schembri played a football match in his memory.

It was hosted by Mark Gilbert and the team at Oakwood.

George was a stalwart of the Crawley & District Football League for over 30 years, and over 100 people came to watch two “old boy” teams, Phoenix and Bluebird, put on the entertainment.

His son Rodney rolled-back the years and showed he still has the same deft touch he had when younger!

The weather was glorious, and the match itself competitive under the watchful-eyes of on field referees John Doctrive, Alex McGill and Michael Apostolides, combined with County FA Rep John Burns and the ever popular Lionel Woodward from the stand.

Phoenix took a 2-0 lead with Matt Weatherall scoring a 30-yard screamer and Steve Agnew a solo goal, rounding the keeper.

Just before half-time, Steve McEwan rose at the back post to pull one back for Bluebird.

With roll on roll off subs all 32 players were involved. The second half remained close – with Paul Fitzgerald slotting for Phoenix late on to make the final score 3-1 to Phoenix.

The result was not important – the purpose of the match was to recognise the contribution of George – and celebrate his life – and this was achieved.

The minute’s silence and associated clapping was very moving – and it was fitting that George’s wife Christine and her family presented the trophy.

In addition over £500 was raised for Cancer Research.

The day was a good celebration of a true gent of Crawley football.
