Wasps gutted after pull-out
Crawley Wasps players celebrate Matilda Hallgren's goal which knocked out Crystal Palace in the Women's FA Cup
CRAWLEY Wasps Ladies manager Paul Harding admitted he was ‘absolutely gutted’ that Ipswich Town pulled out of Sunday’s historic FA Cup First Round tie on the morning of the game because they couldn’t raise a team.
Special arrangements had been laid on with extra catering and even commemorative T-shirts had been made which were going to be worn as training tops.
After receiving the call at 9.35am the manager had to put up notices at their home ground, Finches Field, Pease Pottage, telling spectators the game was off.
Harding said: “It was going to be our Cup Final. I fail to understand why a semi-pro’ side from two divisions above us should pull-out. Perhaps they were frightened of us!”
The Second Round Proper draw completed on Monday saw the Wasps coupled with another exciting home tie on Sunday, January 8 against Tottenham based MSA Ladies FC from the Greater London Women’s Football League.
Harding added: “To be positive we have the prize money (£775) and another home tie in the FA Cup to look forward to.”
Wasps return to South East Combination League action this Sunday and have a tough test away to unbeaten table-toppers Eastbourne Town Ladies, kick-off 2pm at the Saffrons at Eastbourne.
