STRANGE lights were spotted in the sky over Crawley as more than 200 reports of UFOs flooded in over the weekend.
Baffled Ifield residents contacted the Observer after seeing 10 flaming shapes floating in the night sky over the town late on Saturday.

One worried witness from Rusper Road, who didn't want to be named, said: "I was just at home in my third floor flat.

"I don't know what to say, I've never seen anything like it. There were these lights just hanging there, they were passing over the town and looked like they were going towards Gatwick.

"But the way they were moving it definitely wasn't a plane. I've seen a lot of things but, nothing like this."

The spooked 21-year-old added: "None of my mates could believe our eyes - they were just these orange orbs, hanging there. I just got out my mobile and started filming."

James Hatfield of UFO investigations UK said they had received a record number of calls over the weekend.

He said: "More than 200 people got in touch claiming to have seen UFOs on Saturday night. Normally we receive ten to 15 reports a day."

Looks remarkably like lights beamed out from a spotlight/lightshow and reflecting off clouds - exactly like the ones used outside the old night club in Three Bridges some years ago. That also resulted in a spate of UFO reports before it was pointed out to the young journalist who was short of copy in mid-summer....... :-))

It may be worth while noting that UFO stands for UNIDENTIFED flying objects - they cease to be UFOs when the've been identified.

Well one way to prove that is to find out if there were any "lightshows" or anything on that night that could explain it. It doesn't look like light reflection off of clouds - but then the footage seems a bit wobbly which could have caused the effect of "moving" flamed objects.
But is it so hard to believe we are not alone? The chances are there are more intelligent life forms on other planets outside of our solar system. For all we know, Earth is just an alien experiment and we (humans) were a virus placed on Earth to see what happens... I think we're failing the test. :)

They are Sky candles. They have been used numerous times before to generate UFO hoaxes as they hang in the sky, and then appear to disappear when they suddenly burn out.

It may not have been a deliberate hoax. People use them for celebrations such as weddings

The reader who kindly sent in the video doesn't seem to have filmed anything too alarming, for one it is not the clearest image.
I too heard fireworks on saturday night, in fact they were fairly loud and caused me to look out of the window. As for the lights belonging to a UFO from outerspace now I think I really have read it all.

Airspace around here is tightly monitored and if a UFO had entered the airspace I feel certain the hardworking traffic controllers at the airport would have something to say about it!

A lovely story for the paper but a "story" just the same!

end quote..

I say once again, it seems extremely likely that these were Chinese lantern sky candles

See : http://www.skycandle.co.uk/

"On average our Skycandles will be in the air for about 12 minutes and reach up to a mile high."

I am the person who saw these orange orbs along with my two friends from my flat in ifield, they were actually coming from the gatwick direction towards town if you like, we have all seen shooting stars, comets plains, most normal things, but when you see something foriegn in the sky like this it becomes hard to describe. the closest you could get to a good description was "fire ball like" they had the same colour that you get from street lamps (which i can assure you they are not!) some people are saying the could be chineese lanterns which rise due to hot air; well for one these objects lasted a good 15-20 minutes, and two if they were lanterns how can u see a flame from a good mile away or so in the sky, not to mention the air gets thiner the higher the altitude. its funny that no one from ATC (air traffic controll) did not see anything... if you look in other news for example The Sun stated that atleast more than 5 - 6 different towns/cities over the UK spotted strang things in the sky on that saturday in particular.
I can appreciate it being hard to believe, but its best to keep an open mind until you see something yourself, which someday you most probably will as it seems to be becoming more frequent.
who knows maybe the government know more than we do?
or like someone said above, we could all be one big project :)
anyway im glad I saw this, it was a good experiance whatever they were hoax or not.
p.s. after searching up sky lanterns in google it could be possible that these objects are lanterns. however I could only see close ups and none of them being in as far distance that we saw that night.
