Sean Collins, one of the judges, spent a few hours taking photos at Warnham Local Nature Reserve last weekend where he says there’s still plenty to see: “At the bullfinch hide there’s nut-hatches, chaffinches and greenfinches. It was a lovely day.”

The Reserve is seeing lots of visitors since opening up again, tempted by the autumn colours and mellow light that September brings. Neil Henry, a trustee and volunteer, said that some lucky people had managed to see a kingfisher in action and a grass snake catching the late summer sun.

Spokeswoman Jo Browse said: “The competition for under-19s is just one of the ecological projects in 2020 at St Margaret’s Church in Warnham under the banner Theme Green.

“Entry is free and open to all young people in the Horsham District.

“Three local professional photographers are judging the three age groups, and there are cash prizes to be won.

“The winner in each age group also bags a masterclass at Warnham Nature Reserve with award-winning nature photographer Sean Collins (@collinsphotograhic on Instagram).”

The three age groups are: under nines, nine-13, 14-18. There will be an exhibition of short-listed entries in early November.

Prizes in each age group are: first prize – £25 and a masterclass with Sean Collins, prize-winning nature photographer; second prize – £15; third prize £10
