For many, JJ Waller is the go-to photographer for consistently capturing the radical spirit and unique identity of Brighton the city.

His ninth and latest book, Sussex By The Sea goes further, presenting our fabulous coast as a series of imagined postcards, the sort of postcards you’re unlikely to ever see on the racks fronting seafront souvenir rock shops.

These cards show the familiar and the not-so-familiar Sussex coast in his witty, playful and uniquely observed style.

“Making the work for this book has been a great journey of discovery,” he said. “What an exciting and eclectic coast Sussex has. From Camber Sands to the dunes of the Witterings and East Head, I met surprise after surprise.

“Old railway carriage homes, beaches full of ancient shark teeth, access to an island via a buzzer linked to a military guard house, dinosaur footprints, clothing-optional secret lagoons – and who knew Sussex had so many exotic animals prowling the reed beds and stalking the piers?

“I bumped into Eddie Izzard and am pretty certain I saw the French coast too.

“Did you know both The Jam and Madness have sung about Selsey?

“Or that the theme to Sailing By was written whilst looking across a bay to Bognor? Have you ever heard of Medmerry salt marshes or that St Leonard was the patron saint of prisoners? Did you know that Hastings had two English kings? Harold and The King Of Concrete, Sydney Little? Did you know that Sussex has the largest caravan holiday home site in Europe? The list of discoveries was endless. Every day making this book was a really fantastic treat.”
