Visitors can learn about Janine’s own hand painted photography techniques and see an exhibition of her work.

Since the first days of primitive monochrome photography, people have attempted to add colour by hand, to enhance images.

Originally, they wanted to make the image as realistic as possible and hand-colouring was the easiest way to achieve this. However, in the mid 20th century in the USA, Kodak introduced Kodachrome colour film, enabling people to enjoy full-colour photographic images for the first time.

In the wake of this breakthrough, hand-colouring was a neglected and largely obsolete skill for many years, until a few people discovered that colouring monochrome pictures by hand enabled them to add a creative, personal, artistic dimension to the image that no mechanical process could achieve.

Janine’s hand-coloured pictures have a luminous, ethereal quality that could not be replicated any other way. Her signature artwork is to print black and white fine art photographs onto watercolour paper and then selectively reintroduce colour back into the image by hand painting, using watercolour pencils and washes.

Janine will be in The Mezzanine Gallery at the South Downs Heritage Centre, South Downs Nurseries, Hassocks, between 10am and 4pm.
