Bexhill Horticultural Society

Our Winter meetings got off to a great start at St. Martha's Hall, Little Common on October 4, when an audience of more than 100 were treated to an afternoon of great interest by Mr. Julian Porter, curator of Bexhill Museum.

His subject was The History of Bexhill Et Al and beginning with the earliest fossilised dinosaur footprints that have been found in the area, he continued through the ages of the Saxons, Normans, the gradual construction of the Old Town, right down to the arrival of the Earls De La Warr, the building of the Pavilion, and the seafront as we know it now. He spoke with great authority and detail for over ninety minutes without a break, and without notes. His sound knowledge, peppered with humour and tragedy, and accompanied by some excellent slides, kept the audience enthralled.

We were pleased to welcome so many members and visitors, including several new members attending their first Winter meeting. We hope you will all be able to join us again for the next one on November 1, when there will be an illustrated talk by Ian Rumley-Dawson.
