Choir helps children’s charity

Emsworth’s Renaissance Choir is helping the Mayor of Chichester Michael Woolley towards his target of raising £15,000 for Chichester-based charity Children On The Edge.

With £12,108 in the bag already, Michael is 81 per cent of the way there - and he’s hoping the choir’s concert in Chichester Cathedral on April 16 at 7.30pm will take him over the line.

The concert will offer Music Of The Spanish Pilgrims. Tickets are available from Chichester Tickets or the Cloisters Shop at the Cathedral.

Michael organised a Renaissance Choir concert in the Cathedral last year and is delighted to have them back.

“They are not charging us. They are giving their services for free - and they are a very good choir indeed. They sing unaccompanied church music from the 15th and 16th centuries. Some of it is a bit earlier than that.

“When I heard that they were singing, I thought it would be good that they were helping. I was not sure if I was going to be captivated, but I was completely bowled over. I was just totally enthralled!”

Last year’s concert, after expenses, made several hundred pounds for the charity; now, Michael is hoping to step it up to several thousand with a much bigger audience, all in support of his adopted cause for his term of office.

“There is an international children’s charity based right here in Chichester! Children On The Edge helps children all around the world, particularly the developing world.

“Children On The Edge was founded by Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop, and has has enjoyed 20 years success from their headquarters in Chichester. At present they are implementing projects to help thousands of vulnerable Burmese refugee children living in countries like Thailand. They help ensure that children receive education, food, accommodation. They offer them hope.

“It’s great to have them as my mayoral charity this year as I want them to be better known and would love to raise them £15,000 - enough to keep the Children’s House in Thailand going for another twelve months. “

Anyone can support Michael’s fundraising through http://www.justgiving.com/themayor.

“As Mayor, I commend Children On The Edge to you. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also very efficient: the children get your money faster and with Gift Aid.”
