Chorus at Chapel

Sussex Chorus returns to one of its favourite venues, Lancing College Chapel, on April 16 to perform works by George Frederic Handel, one of the greatest composers of the late baroque period.

The choir, conducted by its musical director Neil Jenkins, is joined by three soloists, the Sussex Classical Players and the organist John Walker.

The concert will open with a performance of the Coronation Anthem, Zadok the Priest.

A concert spokesman said: “There are relatively few pieces of music which in the space of a few bars are capable of evoking the mood of ceremony and patriotism associated with England’s great State occasions.

“John Walker, who supports the choir so ably in rehearsals, will perform Handel’s Organ Concerto in F Major. At the first performance this concerto concluded, unusually with a choral Alleluia.

“This was not included in the published edition but Sussex Chorus has searched out the movement and will restore it once again to its rightful place!

“The concert continues with two pieces written 20 years apart which show how Handel’s work developed from its fresh and lively beginnings, to his mature years in his setting of Dryden’s poem celebrating St Cecilia’s Day and extolling the power of music.”
