Christ’s Hospital new musical director

Andrew Cleary becomes musical director for Christ’s Hospital Choral Society this month (September) when he takes up the role of director of music at Christ’s Hospital School.

Andrew began his musical training as a chorister at York Minster and later at St Albans’ Cathedral.

He was appointed organ scholar at Norwich Cathedral in 1987 and at the University of East Anglia where he read music, specialising in conducting and performance.

After graduating in 1990 Andrew studied at the Royal College of Music in London. Since then he has held a number of posts, including assistant organist at St Martin-in-the-Fields Church and has conducted several choirs.

He was previously director of music at The Portsmouth Grammar School and musical director of Portsmouth Festival Choir. Andrew is President-elect of the national Music Masters and Mistresses Association.

Christ’s Hospital Choral Society spokeswoman Liz Lancaster said: “Andrew has set out the programme of music for CHCS during the next year. Andrew is enthusiastic about joining CHCS and we all look forward to meeting him in September.

“We will be singing Eternal Light by Howard Goodall and The Little Organ Mass by Haydn in our Remembrance concert on Saturday, November 12 at St Mary’s, The Causeway, Horsham, and rehearsals start on Thursday, September 8 at 7.30pm in The Court Room at Christ’s Hospital School. This first rehearsal will start with a welcoming drink and get together, so that everyone can catch up”on what has happened over the summer.

“New members are always welcome – all voices, ages and temperaments! We don’t hold auditions, just ask that you can sing in tune and enjoy singing, so come and join us.”
