Countdown to Wings and Wheels at Dunsfold

Over the Bank Holiday weekend (August 27/28) numerous aircraft and dozens of cars and motorbikes will be on show.

There will also be several stalls, static displays and a variety of places to buy food and drink.

One of the highlights will be on the Sunday when The Brooklands Museum Vickers ‘Queen of the Skies’ VC10 will be blasting down the runway at 9.30am in a noisy demonstration of her power.

When she’s not taking a trip down the runway she will be open for public tours where visitors can get up close and personal with this terrific tanker at the event.

The VC10 will be located in the motoring paddock and for a donation towards the maintenance of the aircraft, visitors are able to enter the refuelling tanker and learn about how it served with the RAF.

Tours will be offered on a first come first serve basis over the weekend with a suggested donation of adults £5 per person and children £2 per person.

The VC10, which carries the RAF serial number ZA150, was the very last VC10 of 54 built at Brooklands in the 1960s and was one of the last two flying with the RAF from Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and retired this after completing a total of 43,400 flying hours.

The Royal Netherlands Air Force Historic Flight will be returning the North American B-25 Mitchell to the skies over Dunsfold over the weekend.

Between 1943 and 1945, three squadrons of Mitchell Bombers - 98 Squadron, 180 Squadron and 320 Squadron - were based at Dunsfold Aerodrome and used by the RAF in connection with the Allied invasion and liberation of occupied Europe.

The B-25 was developed from the North American NA-40 twin engine attack bomber and flew for the first time on 19th August 1940. Given the name Mitchell after the pioneering US military aviator, General ‘Billy’ Mitchell, the B-25 saw action in every theatre of World War II.

Among the other displays will be the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, one of the world’s premier aerobatic display teams, due to perform both days.

Brooklands Museum Trust will once again be managing the motoring demonstration.

The two hour speed spectacular will take place on the Top Gear test track at the event.

Brooklands Museum have provided memorable motoring demonstrations since its inception in 2005, and this year is set to be its best yet.

Embodying the “Spirit of Brooklands”, visitors are given the opportunity to see Supercars, Classic cars and Vintage icons tear up the track.

Previous examples of these exquisite machines include Porsche 911, Dodge Monaco, TVR Tasmin 280i, Ducati Mutistrada 1200s, Ferrari F355 Berlinetta, Ford GT40 and Lotus Elise 49.

Brooklands Museum will also have a stand in the arena to give visitors a taste of what they can see and learn about at the Museum in Weybridge.

As well as cars and planes, it is also home to Brooklands Motor Track, the world’s first purpose built motor-circuit. It was also home to the ‘Speed Queens’, a collective group of pioneering women who made aviation and motoring history during the 1920s and 1930s. Names such as Hilda Hewlett, the first British woman to gain a pilot’s licence, and Kay Petre, a 4’10’’ Canadian-born racer who became the first woman to lap the track at over 130mph.
