Darkly comic play

Forest Row-based Barebones Project is taking their production of African Gothic to the Brighton Festival Fringe.

The company came together last summer to work on the play for the Forest Row Arts Festival in October and ran to sell-out audiences in the cellar of Dickson and Church. In January this year, they performed for two nights to a full-house in a Soho art gallery.

“This is a challenging and darkly comic play, with powerful performances by the actors,”says director Naomi Wirthner. “Audiences can expect an intense and highly-charged experience.

“Written by South African playwright Reza de Wet, African Gothic tells the story of Sussie and Frikkie. Alone on an isolated farm, they fend off the future by endlessly re-enacting the past, until their skewed version of reality is challenged by the arrival of a stranger.”

Sussie is played by Jane Akuwudike, Frikkie by Gary Wright, Grove by Colin Brown and Alina by Naomi Wirthner.

African Gothic will be running at the Iambic Arts Theatre, Gardner Street, Brighton between until May 20. Tickets are available from Iambic Arts on 01273 572101 or online at www.iambicarts.com.
