Don't miss today's Haywards Heath celebrations, 175 years in the making

Get on down to Haywards Heath today for music and battle as the town celebrates the 175th anniversary of the first train arriving in town.

Two years of hard work and planning have gone into this weekend’s festivities, with much more still to come today.

Sunday’s events include a Victorian parade, music and dance, children’s activities, funfair, and battle re-enactments.

Bluebell Railway will be there with their engine Stepney, and visitors can ride Lenny the Land Train, the 10 1/4 gauge steam train and a horse drawn omnibus and carriage.

Activities are planned throughout the town, on the station forecourt, The Orchards shopping centre, Redwood Centre, and Victoria Park, with a full programme available on the day.

The 175th anniversary celebrations have drawn together many of the town’s groups and societies, as well as schools and businesses.

Local historian Philip Ladd writes: “Settlements within a mile of the station had remained virtually unchanged since the middle ages and without any social or political disturbance, despite the brief clash in 1642: all local society, rich landowners, farmers and workers were dependent on each other for survival and it was this relatively idyllic scene with the railways disturbed.”
