IPSE – Independent Photographers South East – are exhibiting at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery from Friday, July 22, to Friday, September 16.

Spokeswoman Sue Fallon said: “This exhibition is a very diverse and exciting collection of work from members of this long-established group of photographers – celebrating their 25th year together.

“They run both residential and day workshops led by eminent photographers such as, most recently, Simon Norfolk, and they put on exhibitions every two years.

“They are a very mixed bunch – several with MAs in photography and others with no formal qualifications at all. But they all share a passion for the art and craft of photography in its many genres – ranging from pinhole images and cyanotypes, to surreal, contemporary and abstract images.

“One member has published an Arts Council sponsored book, Downscapes of graphic aerial views of the South Downs; another was exhibited alongside Cindy Sherman at The Royal Academy with manipulated images of abandoned factories in classical style.

“Jill Staples is the group’s founding member and following her own successful exhibition at the Prairie Gardens last year, where some of her stunning, abstract floral images were displayed, has moved to a more sombre palette here with studies of leaf, rock and decay.

“Mike Shanahan usually works in black and white, but has produced for this exhibition some colourful abstract images of rock in a series called Petrulip.

“A few photographers have studied some of the different aspects and nature of water, whether in a pool, a pond or the sea – moments of calm and tranquillity and others of strength and movement. Josephine Evans has produced a series of images of lidos and seascapes called Out to Swim, Michael Vogt’s series is titled simply Waves and Tim Morris shows reflections of trees and the tracery of their bare branches in a series called Winter’s End.

“The show is curated by Mick Williamson, who is head of photography at the London Metropolitan University.”
