Exotic Spanish flair is highlight

The London Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Brighton Dome for another four-concert residency joined by world‐ class conductors and artists, with programmes of uplifting and inspirational music from the pens of Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, and Rachmaninoff among others.

Highlights of the season include an evening of exotic Spanish flair with music from Antonio José and Manuel de Falla alongside Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (November 19), an evening of romantic Rachmaninoff (February 18), Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending (March 17) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 to close the season (April 21).

Spokeswoman Helen Boddy said: “We are delighted to be joined by a range of talented young artists, from international award‐-winning pianist (at the Santander and Rubinstein Competitions) Boris Giltburg on February 18, to violinist Fanny Clamagirand (First Prize winner at the Monte Carlo Violin Masters) on March 17.

“Also programmed across the season are virtuosic concertos by Rachmaninoff (February 18), Mendelssohn (March 17) and Beethoven (April 21) as well as some of the greatest symphonies ever created.” 

Helen added: “The opening concert of the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2011/12 season at Brighton Dome (Saturday, November 19, 7.30pm) brings an exotic programme of Spanish flair from Antonio José and Manuel de Falla, conducted by the young Spanish conductor Eduardo Portal.

“Also on the programme, Mussorgsky’s celebrated set of pictures in music – a touching walk past etchings and sketches by Victor Hartman infused with the orchestral colour and power of Maurice Ravel – the perfect opening to the new season.”
