New theatre season has plenty to keep winter blues away

THE Hawth’s November/December/January programme in Crawley offers plenty to look forward to in the winter months ahead.

“As always audiences can look forward to a choice of some of the best live performances around plus films, exhibitions and even party nights to celebrate the festive season”, spokeswoman Lorraine Gould said.

“The Hawth’s music line-up is always second to none, with the array of styles on offer spanning everything from opera to blues and classical to folk.

“English Touring Opera kick off the new season of music with a brand new work from leading British composer Alexander Goehr, Promised End (November 1), inspired by Shakespeare’s King Lear.

“The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra make their first appearance as part of 2010/2011 Classical Concert Series with the first of three concerts focusing on The Great Composers, beginning with Elgar (November 12). For those who miss the king of pop, Who’s Bad (Nov 11) offers the chance to relive three decades of Michael Jackson’s music. Folk fans may well remember John Smith (November 22) from his visit to Crawley Folk Festival in 2009. Described as one of the most exciting voices on the folk scene, John returns for one night only this winter.”

Crawley Blues Festival (November 7) is back for its fifth year.

“The line up promises to be the best yet with no fewer than eight musicians crossing the pond to be part of the festival. Our American performers include Guy Tortora from California, Brooks Williams and New Yorker Toby Walker - all these plus many more alongside home-grown talent including Jim Crawford and The Spikedrivers.”

Theatrical highlights of the new season include Fay Weldon’s Breakfast With Emma (November 15) which offers a new episode to Flaubert’s Madame Bovary in which Emma reveals her debt-ridden, unfaithful past to her husband one morning.

In The Studio the award-winning Paines Plough will take audiences on a full-throttle ride through broken Britain in a special preview of their new show Tiny Volcanoes (Nov 1).

Lorraine added: “We have three great shows to offer dance lovers as StopGAP Dance Company return with two new works in Trespass (Nov 10), Compagnia Sanpapié from Milan present the witty and touching BOH (November 17), and Essence of Ireland (November 14) captures the spirit of the Emerald Isle.

“Those looking for a great night out have plenty to choose from.
