Night of new bands

Keep yourself on the cutting edge of Brighton’s music scene as the monthly night of new and upcoming bands returns to Brighton Dome, Pavilion Theatre with Sweet Sweet Lies (Friday, July 13, 7.30pm, £4).

Spokesman Chris Challis said: “Combining urgent electro-acoustic instrumentals with intelligent, ironic and often bittersweet vocals, Sweet Sweet Lies have carved a folk-pop noir shaped hole in the heart of many of the city’s gig-goers.

“Graduates of BIMM, the band – led by Dominic Van Trapp – released their debut album The Hare, The Hound and The Tortoise in February to great critical acclaim, with pundits lapping up their darkly-humorous song-writing and story-telling.

“Inhabiting a world ringed by the high drama of Scott Walker, the theatrics of Bertolt Brecht, the heart-baring honesty of Elliot Smith and the intensity of Nick Cave, the album’s twelve songs swing with mariachi horns, weaving bass-lines, flamenco flourishes and sorrow-drenched love song waltzes – all packed with richly honest musings on love, hate and the modern relationship.
