Rotary Club of Bexhill

BEXHILL Rotary club again scooped the trophy for the most aesthetic entry at the Great Egg Race in Eastbourne.

The now-annual event hosted by Eastbourne Sovereign Rotary Club and held at St Andrew's School attracted a large number of Rotary, Inner Wheel and Interact Clubs.

The Bexhill team comprised of Keith Walter (formally Walters Electrical), Martin Haswell, Peter Mitchell Davis, Phil Moore, Ray Dixon and President John Meadows.

The challenge was, given 100 sheets of newspaper, two short pieces of string and some Sellotape to build three specified structures.

Phil and Ray set about a free standing tower in excess of two metres and soon had a construction which stood proudly for the whole evening.

Martin and John were delegated a beam of three metres that should not droop below the level of the table.

Martin had the brilliant idea of rolling a continuous rigid tube; the result was a very floppy snake! Keith and Peter put a lot of design thought into a cantilever of at least three metres and Keith came up with a design that was very elegant, however, they had spent too long thinking about it and only achieved a 1.5 metre length.

But it was the style that carried the day, and, although there were a number of comments that it bore an uncanny resemblance to a television aerial, President John stepped up to collect the trophy!

The winning team was from Hailsham and the proceeds of the event went to Polio Plus, Rotary's international campaign to eradicate polio from the planet.
