Singing for charities

Some of the finest singer-songwriters from across Sussex are performing at this year’s Sam’s Christmas Stocking event, raising money for The Martlets Hospice and Shoreham’s Ropetackle Centre Trust.

The music is at the Ropetackle Centre on December 2 at 7.30pm.

Spokesman Ben Parker said: “Hosted by Shoreham-based songstress Samantha Horwill, the theme of this year’s biennial fundraiser is Acoustic Dreams, featuring Irish songbird Jennifer Clarke, alt-country folk pioneers Autumn Red and a very special guest performance from blues chanteuse Jo Harman.”

It’s the third instalment of The Stocking, which has raised money for cancer charities since its inception in 2007 and Sam is over the moon with the support she’s received from the Sussex community.

She said: “I think what makes this year so special is the calibre of artist we have on the bill and the generosity of our community, who have provided us with some amazing prizes to raffle and auction on the night”.

Tickets are £10, available from the Ropetackle by calling 01273 464440 or online at www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk.

Ben is delighted to be supporting The Martlets Hospice: “Christmas is a time for celebration and spending time with friends and family, but this can be a difficult time for those affected by cancer. One in three people develop cancer during their lives. One in four people die from cancer.

“The Martlets Hospice plays a vital role in helping people to live life as fully as they can right up until the end. The hospice cares for people across our local community, but receive only 30 per cent of their funding from the NHS, leaving a shortfall to raise every year of over £3 million.

“This year’s event marks the third anniversary of the death of Carol Horwill, Sam’s mother, who was cared for at the hospice in Hove after a year-long battle with lung cancer.”
