Sixty years of education '“ and sailing boats

Some went on to fame and fortune, others went on to make lives for themselves in other countries.

An awful lot of them stayed in Crawley and sent the next generation off to the same school.

It’s those old boys and girls who may be able to help today’s staff and students pen a suitable memoir to the children and adults of years gone by.

Under the guiding eye of headteacher Ann Fearon, staff and pupils past and present have been invited to contribute to a book to commemorate the school’s 60th anniversary.

To jog a few memories, we have a selection of photographs of school life from over the years.

The school opened as a secondary modern in 1953 with pioneering headteacher Philip Keyte in the hot seat.

Mr Keyte designed the school’s uniform and created its motto ‘effort achieves’, which is still used to this day.

In 1960, Hazelwick became fully comprehensive (11-18) and was designated a specialist technology college in 1998.

A second specialism – in the humanities – followed in 2006.

In April 2009, Hazelwick became one of the first schools in the area to acquire foundation and trust status followed by Academy status in August 2011.
