“It is intended to be a lavish production requiring a large cast of women and men, particularly young men.

“The Society is looking to recruit as many people as possible for this event: not just actors and singers but those willing to get involved in costumes, set-building, and other backstage roles.

“Castings are to be held on Monday, February 10, Thursday, February 13, and Monday, February 17, at the Women’s Hall, Billingshurst at 8pm.”

Jackie added: “Oh, What a Lovely War! is a theatrical chronicle of the First World War, told through the songs and documents of the period.

“First performed by Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, London, in 1963, it received the acclaim of London audiences and critics. It has become something of a classic of the modern theatre and was also made into a film in 1969.

“The production features a number of songs of the era such as It’s a Long Way to Tipperary and Pack up your Troubles. Beneath its ostensibly-satirical and flippant surface lies the real message of the futility and horror of war.

“Billingshurst Dramatic Society are fortunate to have been given permission to put on this production as it is also being performed professionally this year.

“If you think you would like to be involved, please come along if you can. You will receive a friendly welcome, and we promise that auditions will not be intimidating. We want to have as many people onstage as we can.
