Theatre launches into panto with Robinson Crusoe

Burgess Hill Theatre Club launches into panto with Robinson Crusoe, directed by Suzi Allan from January 13-28, with performances on Fridays evening, Saturdays afternoons and evenings and a matinee on the middle Sunday (tickets on 01444 242984).

Spokesman Andy Squires said: “This year marks the 47th pantomime in the town by the Burgess Hill Theatre Club. Robinson Crusoe will contain all of the traditional jokes, songs and promises to continue the great tradition of the club.

“The club itself was originally known as the Burgess Hill Amateur Dramatic Society way back around 1935 and there has been a great tradition of theatre in the town ever since. Bringing it up to date this vibrant club puts on three productions a year as well as the amazing pantomimes and has a strong youth section.

“Over the last two years the club has sold out Contemporary Canterbury, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and 84 Charing Cross Road, which must mean that not only is the club thriving but that Burgess Hill really has a taste for this type of theatre.

“The club also supports local writers by giving a showcase for new talent such as our autumn play Karen’s Garden written by local author Cherry Woodhouse. The club’s venue in Church Walk is so intimate, the action so close, that each play creates an atmosphere and immerses the audience totally in the action. Our next production will be our 47th pantomime. This is a huge undertaking with a cast of 20 and a back stage crew of twice the size. The show is seen by around 3,000 people from across Sussex over the three weekends. The show is based on a script handed down from the 1930s through the hands of one family now being directed by Suzi Allan and so is highly traditional. Tickets are available from the theatre on Saturdays and Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm or can be reserved by ringing 01444 242984 at other times.”

Andy added: “As with any club there are so many roles, it isn’t just about the actors! The club has an extensive wardrobe and props department. Having our own theatre in Church Walk means we have lighting and sound.

“We have people selling tickets, people involved in publicity, directors, make-up artists, hairdressers, magicians and back stage crew shifting scenery, set designers and so the list goes on. If you feel like getting involved in any of our productions why not give us a ring and we will find out where your talents lie. For membership applications see our website at www.burgesshilltheatreclub.co.uk or call 01444 246167.”
