Vintage posters reveal history of Horsham and Crawley

The images, taken from major events in the two towns since 1700, are being shown on Crawley Library’s video wall – made up of nine large television screens.

The exhibition showcases a sample of more than 1,200 posters once owned by famous West Sussex historian William Albery.

The prints, featuring World War One recruitment notices, flyers from Crawley Town football matches, as well as several images of royal celebrations, were recently digitised by the Friends of Horsham Museum.

The group also set up its own website to include hundreds of additional images not displayed in the library exhibition.

Lionel Barnard, county council cabinet member for residents services, said: “This is a unique opportunity to see the history of Horsham and Crawley through rare and historic artwork.

“Many of the posters are hundreds of years old and offer an exclusive insight into the two towns throughout the last three centuries.”

The exhibition, which is free to view, will be shown on Crawley Library’s video wall until Thursday August 8.
