This week’s film releases - October 10

It’s based on the books by James Dashner that started with a trilogy but seem to be growing, with the addition of a couple of prequels.

Early notices are good for the movie which stars Dylan O’Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Will Poulter.

The story sees Thomas (O’Brien) being dumped in a community of boys but with no memory of why he’s there or even who he is.

The only thing they all know is that freedom is somewhere the other side of an enormous maze.

Back in the 1970s the British Army was in the middle of a war of attrition in Northern Ireland against the IRA.

‘71 (15) is a snapshot of that time - a claustrophobic film that follows a young soldier who inadvertently gets separated from his unit while on patrol.

The army is obviously desperate to get their man back while the streets of Belfast become like a minefield for the soldier.

The excellent Susan Sarandon gets a juicy role in The Calling (15).

She plays a detective in a quiet town who is suddenly faced with a series of nasty murders which are the work of a particularly driven serial killer.

Annabelle (15) is a variation on a theme.

There have been a few horror movies involving dolls and this one involves a very old one that starts providing some supernatural weirdness for a couple.

Award-winning actress Emma Thompson turns up as the writer of Effie Gray (12A).

She also stars in the film, alongside Dakota Fanning and Claudia Cardinale in a story about the rather unusual relationship between Victorian art critic John Ruskin and his young bride Effie.

With the likes of Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, David Suchet, James Fox, Russell Tovey and Derek Jacobi this certainly promises much.
